Understanding hemorrhoids, their types, and how they affect your health.
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus, similar to varicose veins. They can develop internally or externally.
Located inside the rectum and usually painless. They may prolapse (push out) during bowel movements.
Located under the skin around the anus. They can be painful, especially if thrombosed (blood clot forms).
Hemorrhoids affect about 50% of adults at some point in their lives. They are more common after age 30.
