About Hemorrhoids

Definition

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus, similar to varicose veins. They can develop internally or externally.

Internal Hemorrhoids

Located inside the rectum and usually painless. They may prolapse (push out) during bowel movements.

External Hemorrhoids

Located under the skin around the anus. They can be painful, especially if thrombosed (blood clot forms).

Prevalence

Hemorrhoids affect about 50% of adults at some point in their lives. They are more common after age 30.
