Common Symptoms

01

Recurrent Anal Boils

The most common sign. A painful boil (abscess) appears near the anus, bursts to release pus, heals temporarily, and then comes back again.

02

Pus or Blood Discharge

Constant or intermittent leakage of foul-smelling pus or blood from a tiny opening near the anus. This often causes staining of undergarments.

03

Pain & Swelling

Throbbing pain in the anal region, which gets worse when sitting, moving around, or during bowel movements. The area may feel hot and tender.

04

Skin Irritation (Itching)

The constant moisture from the discharge irritates the skin around the anus, causing persistent itching and redness.

05

Fever & Chills

If the infection spreads or the abscess is deep, you may experience fever, chills, and a general feeling of fatigue.

Confusion: Is it Piles or Fistula?

Anal Fistula

  • Visible: Small hole near the anus.

Piles (Hemorrhoids)

  • Pain: Usually painless (unless thrombosed).
  • Visible: Lumps coming out of anus.

Do I have a Fistula?

Identifying the signs

"If you have a boil that bursts, heals, and comes back at the same spot repeatedly, it is 99% a Fistula, not just a simple infection."

Dr. Jaya Maheshwari demonstrates how to check for an external opening and explains why you might see discharge on your underwear.
