Pilonidal Sinus (PNS)
Pilonidal Sinus (PNS) is a chronic skin condition that occurs near the tailbone (coccyx) at the top of the buttock crease. It develops when hair and debris become trapped beneath the skin, leading to infection, swelling, pain, and pus formation. If left untreated, it can cause recurrent infections and persistent discomfort.
Symptoms
- Pain and tenderness near the tailbone
- Swelling or lump in the buttock cleft
- Pus or blood discharge from the sinus opening
- Redness and inflammation around the affected area
- Foul-smelling drainage
- Difficulty sitting for long periods
- Recurring infections and abscess formation
Causes
- Ingrown or trapped hair beneath the skin
- Prolonged sitting
- Excessive body hair
- Friction and pressure in the buttock region
- Obesity
- Poor hygiene
- Family history of pilonidal disease
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually based on a detailed medical history and physical examination. The surgeon evaluates the sinus openings, swelling, and signs of infection. In complex or recurrent cases, imaging studies may be recommended to assess the extent of the sinus tract.
