Fistula
An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel-like tract that develops between the anal canal and the skin around the anus. It usually occurs as a result of an infection or abscess near the anal region. Anal fistulas can cause persistent pain, swelling, pus discharge, and recurrent infections if not treated properly.
Symptoms
- Pain and swelling around the anus
- Persistent or recurrent pus discharge
- Bleeding from the affected area
- Skin irritation and redness around the anus
- Foul-smelling discharge
- Difficulty sitting comfortably
- Recurring anal abscesses
Causes
- Anal gland infections
- Previous anal abscess
- Crohn’s disease
- Tuberculosis and other infections
- Trauma or injury to the anal region
- Previous anorectal surgeries
- Inflammatory bowel diseases
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves a detailed medical history, physical examination, and specialized proctological assessment. Imaging studies such as MRI Fistulogram, Endoanal Ultrasound, or CT scans may be advised to determine the fistula's course and complexity before treatment planning.
