Stages of
Prolapse

Prolapse is graded from Stage 0 to 4 based on how far the organ has dropped. Stage 1-2 can often be managed with exercises.

Stage 0 (Normal)

No prolapse. Organs are well supported.

Stage 1 (Mild)

The organ has dropped slightly but is still >1cm above the vaginal opening. Often symptom-free.

Stage 2 (Moderate)

The bulge is right at the vaginal opening (±1cm). Symptoms start appearing.

Stage 3 (Severe)

The bulge protrudes >1cm outside the vagina. It rubs against clothes and may bleed.

Stage 4 (Complete)

Procidentia. The entire organ (uterus/vagina) is completely outside the body.

When is Surgery Needed?

Treatment by Stage

"We treat the patient, not the X-ray. If you have Stage 2 prolapse but no pain, we might not operate yet."

Dr. Jaya explains that early stages can be treated with Kegels and Pessaries. Surgery is usually reserved for symptomatic Stage 2, 3 & 4.
