Constipation

It is not just about frequency. If you strain, feel blocked, or pass hard stools regularly, you are constipated.

Clinical Definition

Hard, Dry Stool

Stool usually looks like small pebbles or lumps (Type 1 or 2 on Bristol Scale).

Straining

Needing to push excessively for more than 25% of the bowel movement time.

Incomplete Evacuation

Feeling like there is still stool left inside even after finishing.

Infrequent Motions

Passing stool fewer than 3 times a week is clinically considered constipation.

Manual Evacuation

Needing to press on the abdomen or use a finger to help pass stool.

When to see a Doctor?

Chronic constipation can be a sign of colon cancer or obstruction if accompanied by:

  • Blood in stool
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Sudden change in bowel habits (after age 50)

Normal Frequency

Normal bowel habits range from 3 times a day to 3 times a week.
